Orca Free is dedicated to bringing you the very latest research on orca whales and the issues that threaten them. This section provides an overview of the materials and organizations that we have referenced in preparing this site and allows you to deepen your understanding through books, film and contact with scientists and activists.

Although orcas have been studied since the 1970s most scientists would admit that we know very little about this animal, particularly in regard to its intelligence, language and culture. In fact, many of the scientists that pioneered orca studies are still hard at work. Some are associated with commercial operations, and may be able to accept donations or whale 'adoptions' to further their studies. Other organizations listed here are addressing specific issues threatening the orca today, such as captivity or whale watching.
